Billy Cone

For many years Billy Cone has photographed sites and scenes, not realizing, he was learning to “see.”  28 years after his first photography course he shoots film and digital, still learning to “see.”  His favorite subjects are women and the nude, statuary and artistic travel photography.  His fourth book, black and white close ups of women from around the world, will be released this year.  FEMME is a compendium of images of expressions of emotion and poignant quotes by famous people like Oscar Wilde and Albert Einstein.

“Billy is a free spirit who looks upon our world through his own unique vision.  He reaches across centuries, tapping styles and civilizations to seamlessly integrate them within his contemporary creations.  This is a trademark of all his finished work—be it a photograph, a painting, or a ceramic.”  Ralph Esmerian, Collector and Patron of the Arts

“Your, (Billy’s), creative, zany, and playful spirit is very much alive!  Delightfully whimsical!  Visually arresting.  Your portraits are your finest yet.  Thanks for the smile!”
William McNeill, Artist and Grand Nephew of James Whistler

The subject is quickly recognizable for the viewers of a Billy Cone—a face.  These matchless images are inspired by the soulful visages of ordinary and some not-so-ordinary people that Billy has passed on the streets of Europe and America or in history books.  Calling the eyes “the essential seat of emotion,” Billy shares his new “friends” on paper and canvas.

As a professional photographer for over two decades, the author of three books, and the Grand Nephew of the famous Cone Sisters of Baltimore, it seems quite befitting that Billy would eventually create his own original masterpieces.  Contemporary Art is his genre, a self-taught technique cultured through years of “seeing.”

Having been called “Matissesque” and “creatively unique” for their similarity to the works of modern artists, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, these fine works are undoubtably investment pieces for the discriminating collector or the hip aesthetic who wants to make a statement in his or her home(s).

In 2007 Billy began drawing faces.  His first faces were Buddhas because he says they have simple lines.  In three short years Billy drew over 400 faces, mostly 16”X20” in size.  His line drawings are simple and reflect the emotion of FEMME.  Urged by his friends to paint the drawings, Billy put brushes to canvas and Voila!  FACETURE!!!  These 48” X 60” paintings are expressive and colorful.  Much of his work can be seen at www.billycone.smugmug.com in galleries or on this website.  Enjoy!
